The Americanization of political campaigns, which are characterized by certain peculiarities, such as the personalization of politics, weakening of party organizations, wide use of media channels in the political marketing process, need for specialization, primacy of opinions over ideologies and conceptualization of citizens as policy consumers, is a by-product of these dramatic transformations. This paper aims to compare Forza Italia and the Young Party through the Americanization of political campaigns with special emphasis on the connection between the transformation of political campaigns and the crisis of representative democracy.Article An Empirical Investigatıon Of Turkish Consumers' Online Shopping Patterns(2008) Ergin, Elif Akagün; Akbay, Handan ÖzdemirWith the rapid rise of Internet, the number of consumers shopping online for consumer goods and services has grown dramatically. Similar to the global trend, Turkish consumers are increasingly opting to use the Internet for their shopping purposes as well. With a population over 70 million people, Turkish market’s potential for online commerce is quite significant. The aim of this study is to examine male and female consumers’ online shopping behavior, usage patterns and the key elements that encourage online shopping.Book Part Citation - Scopus: 8Bitcoin Market Price Analysis and an Empirical Comparison With Main Currencies, Commodities, Securities and Altcoins(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2019) Dinçergök, B.; Haşlak, Ş.; Pirgaip, B.The purpose of this study is to analyze Bitcoin (BTC) market prices and to answer the question of whether there is a relationship between BTC and other asset prices, where other assets include currencies, commodities, securities and altcoins. In the empirical part, we evaluate the lead-lag relationships among each type of asset. Consequently, we compare BTC with major currencies and stock exchanges of the U.S., the EU, the U.K. and Japan (USD-SPX, EUR-DAX, GBP-FTSE and JPY-NIK), with currencies and stock exchanges of the U.S., the U.K., Russia, Venezuela and China where BTC is actively traded (USD-SPX, GBP-FTSE, RUB-MOEX, VEF-IBVC and YUAN-SSCE), with major commodities (GOLD and OIL) and with major altcoins (ETH, XRP and LTC) on a daily basis for the period spanning from 2010.07 to 2018.12. We employ Johansen co-integration, Granger causality, impulse response functions and forecast error variance decomposition analyses in our study. Our results show that BTC does not have a long-run relationship with any asset type, but that it has a short-run relationship with gold and especially altcoins, which are both significant and bidirectional. While BTC and altcoins are closely interrelated with each other, BTC price variation is mostly borne by its own prices in all cases. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2019.Article Citation - Scopus: 3Decision Analysis on Criteria That Affect Design of Reverse Logistic Systems in Textile Sector(Chamber of Textile Engineers, 2018) Güzel, B.; Taş, A.In this study, reverse logistics implementation is examined in terms of the textile industry. The study also examines the measurements affecting the decisions and activities of companies working in the textile recycling industry and it contains the order of the importance of these measurements, analyzed by using AHP and DEMATEL multi-criteria decision making methods. © 2012.Article Defining and Measuring Informality: The Case of Turkish Labor Market1(2015) Acar, Elif Öznur; Tansel, AysıtIn this study, we consider how informality can be defined and measured in the Turkish labor market. The empirical analysis consists of developing three alternative definitions of labor informality, and exploring the relevance and implications of each for the Turkish labor market using descriptive statistics and multivariate probit analysis of the likelihood of informality under each definition. We find that social security registration criterion is a better measure of informality in the Turkish labor market given its ability to capture key relationships between several individual and employment characteristics and the likelihood of informality.Article Do Depreciations Really Trigger an Inflow of Foreign Direct Investment? The Case of Turkey(Sosyo Ekonomi Soc, 2018) Erünlü, ZeynepIn this study, the relationship between real exchange rate and foreign direct investment is examined using the Logistic Smooth Transition - Autoregressive Distributed Lag (LST-ARDL) model. Analyzing the effect of real exchange rate changes on foreign direct investment is very crucial for a developing country like Turkey which has a relatively large foreign debt stock. The estimation results show that foreign direct investment inflows to Turkey increase when Turkish Lira appreciates against the US dollar and this effect is especially strong during periods of high investment inflows. Thus, for Turkey to attract productive capital flows rather than unstable short-term portfolio flows it has to maintain a strong currency against the US dollar.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 6Does Adr Listing Affect the Dynamics of Volatility in Emerging Markets(Charles Univ-prague, 2010) Umutlu, Mehmet; Umutlu, Mehmet; Altay-Salih, Aslihan; Akdeniz, Levent; İşletmeThis paper analyzes the time-series variation in the return volatility of non-US stocks from emerging markets that are cross-listed on US exchanges. Unlike previous studies in the cross-listing literature, return volatility is modeled using conditional heteroscedaslicity models. We find that firms' exposure to risks such as local and global market betas remain unchanged after cross-listing. Moreover, we do not identify notable changes in the dynamics of the volatility of cross-listed stocks after cross-listing except for leverage effects. We further show that the mean level of conditional variance is not affected after cross-listing. Thus, our results provide counter-evidence to the belief that foreign investor participation drives volatility upward.Article Citation - WoS: 1Early Ottoman-Dutch Political and Commercial Relations After 1612 Capitulations(Publ House Bulgarian Acad Sci, 2004) Ari, B; Arı, Bülent; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerArticle Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4The Effects of Paternalistic Leadership on Task Performance: Testing a Moderated Mediation Model in Turkish Organizations(Nomos verlagsgesellschaft Mbh & Co Kg, 2021) Karabay, Melisa Erdilek; Sener, Irge; Elci, Meral; Cetin, FatihDrawing on the findings from a serial moderated mediation model, this study aims to expand prior research by investigating the interaction between paternalist leadership and employee task performance. Study also aims to test the indirect effects of perceived person-organization fit and psychological ownership on the relationship between paternalistic leadership and employee task performance, through serial mediation models. Furthermore, the moderating role of organizational size in direct and all indirect relations between paternalistic leadership and task performance, through five different models is tested. Sample consists of 1,652 employees from various industries in Istanbul, Turkey. Hypothesized relationships were tested through structural equation modelling. The findings demonstrated the significant positive direct relationship between paternalistic leadership and employee task performance. Psychological ownership mediated the relationship of paternalistic leadership and task performance while person-organization fit had no mediating effect. Practical implications and further recommendations are also discussed.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4An Empirical Survey of Consumer Ethnocentrism in Kazakhstan and the Preference of Consumers on Imported Products(Ahmet Yesevi Univ, 2017) Nakip, Mahir; Nakip, Mahir; Gokmen, Aytac; Gökmen, Aytaç; Uluslararası Ticaret ve FinansmanThe reality of globalization declines the frontiers for cross border international trade and investments as well as functions as a means to converge the consumer needs and expectations on a global base. The convergence of the expectations of consumers is considerably beneficial for international businesses in their international marketing activities. However, this issue does not realize in every country or regional market. Yet, consumer ethnocentrism is a profound obstacle for international businesses which emphasis nationalistic sentiments, pride and the rejection of any product or idea that is made in another country without any rationale reasoning. Thus, this study is aimed at researching the subject of consumer ethnocentrism in the Central Asian Turkish Republic of Kazakhstan. The results indicate that there is not a strong relation between ethnocentric perceptions and product necessity in Kazakhstan. Also, sub-dimensions of ethnocentrism have different correlation levels with each imported products. In addition, religious and moral values are not effective factors in explaining the variation in imported products.Article Citation - Scopus: 2Exchange Rate and Turkish Agricultural Trade Balance With Eu (15)(2012) Yazici, M.; Yazıcı, Mehmet; Islam, M.Q.; İktisatThis paper investigates the short-run and long-run impact of exchange rate on the trade balance of Turkish Agriculture with EU (15) countries. The bounds testing approach to the cointegration and the error correction modeling is employed. A new strategy in the model selection phase is adopted and the optimal model is selected from the set of those models that satisfy both diagnostic tests and cointegration. Thus, unlike the previous literature utilizing this approach, it is ensured that a statistically reliable and cointegrated model is picked up for estimation. Estimation results based on the data for 1988-I to 2008-IV period indicate that in the short-run real exchange rate variable affects agriculture trade balance in trade with EU(15) and depreciation of Turkish Lira improves the trade balance. As for the long-run impact of the exchange rate, depreciation of domestic currency has a statistically significant negative effect on trade balance of agriculture.Article Industry 4.0 Readiness of Smes: Active Participants or Silent Audience of the Revolution(Sosyoekonomi Soc, 2023) Sener, Irge; Karapolatgil, Ahmet AnilNowadays, the technological consequences of the Fourth Industrial Revolution affect all organisations. Arzu; Ozen, Sukru; İşletmeThis study examines the impact of globalization on the organization of production chain in the Turkish film industry. Adopting the historical institutionalist approach, the study examines the institutional change in the organization of production, distribution and exhibition chain in the Turkish film industry for the period of 1950-2006. The main finding of the study is that as a result of opening up the industry to the foreign direct investment in 1989, the organization of production chain evolves from a network structure dominated by regional distributors to a hierarchical network structure dominated by the big US film companies. Another finding is that the multiplex type of film theaters particularly located in big cities emerges as a supplementary form to the theaters with single screen that has been widespread in the previous period. This leads to an increase in the number of cities without theaters. The study emphasizes that the social exclusion manifested by increasing 'theaterlessness' is inherent within the multiplex type of film theater diffused through globalization.Article Investigating the Predictors of Virtual Learning Success and Satisfaction of Secondary School Students During Covid-19 Pandemic Restrictions(T.C. Milli Egitim Bakanligi, 2020) Şener, İ.; Doyduk, H.B.; Türkyilmaz, G.; Karabay, M.E.Covid-19 pandemic, which continues to affect all areas of life, also has significant effects on education. Due to the restrictions applied during the pandemic period, students had to continue their spring term education through distance education tools. It is important to understand the factors affecting students’ satisfaction towards learning and their perceived success, in order to make virtual learning more effective which is expected to continue after the pandemic. In this sense, a survey study was conducted among 180 students studying at two secondary schools on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. Research findings revealed that the effects of virtual course flexibility and perceived usefulness on both virtual learning satisfaction and perceived success were found positive and significant, where the effect of perceived usefulness was found to be highest. For this purpose we use the exponential smooth transition (EST) function in the unit root testing framework and compare this methodology with the one that uses a Fourier function. Although the Fourier function is extensively used in the literature to test the validity of the PPP hypothesis under temporary breaks, this investigation shows that it leads to misleading results.Article The Problem of Checking The Political Power in The Tradition of Siyasat-Nama: The Case of Nushatu's-selatin(Turkiye Orta Dogu Amme Idaresi Enstitusu, 2017) Turk, Hasan Bahadir; Türk, Hasan Bahadır; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerThe problem of how to be able to check the political power lies at the very heart of the historical debates over politics. This problem is part and parcel of another vital political problem that can be best described as the necessity of setting limits to the power of rulers. Accordingly, one might argue that checking the political power and setting limits to it are not basically and simply the same thing. This paper, moving from this assumption, attempts to shed some light upon the problem of checking the political power through the lenses of an Ottoman bureaucrat of the sixteenth century, namely, Mustafa Ali of Gallipoli. In so doing, the paper focuses on a text written by Mustafa Ali in 1581. The major argument of this paper is that Mustafa Ali's text, Nushatu'sSelatin (Advices to Sultans), which is an example of Siyasat-nama genre of books, deals with the problem of checking the political power with a particular emphasis upon three certain principles: Justice, fear of God and merit.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Reading the Emergence of Turkish Nation-State Through the Concept of Habitus(Ahmet Yesevi Univ, 2011) Turk, H. Bahadir; Türk, Hasan Bahadır; Siyaset Bilimi ve Uluslararası İlişkilerThis study aims to investigate the emergence of the nation-state in Turkey and read this process through Pierre Bourdieu and Norbert Elias' concept of habitus. In so doing, first of all, the concept of habitus will be explored. The debates concerning the process of the emergence of the nation-state in Turkey and whether the concept of habitus is fruitful will also be discussed. This study underlines the theoretical opportunities of the concept of habitus, particularly, from the angle of the debates concerning the emergence of the Turkish nation-state and Turkish nationalism. On this axis, this study shows that there is a clear link between Turkish nation-state formation and the Turkish national habitus.
