    Analysis of a Historic Masonry Building

    The paper starts from the observation that historic masonry buildings are often modified and altered to make them fit for present day use. A single-family masonry house in Turkey, situated in an earthquake prone area and built in the early 20(th) century, is studied. The analysis is made based on Turkish regulations for the initial building and for the building after alterations. Introduction of a reinforced-concrete slab has greatly improved seismic resistance of the building.

    Inter-Laboratory Comparison Scheme for Fuel Sector, Labkar in Turkey

    Fuel sector is one of the powerful sectors in Turkish industry. The implementation of a new law for regulating the fuel sector had enforced the quality control of fuels sold to public. This resulted in several accredited fuel-testing laboratories to emerge. Thus, a scheme to evaluate their proficiency in measurements became an important requirement. The inter-laboratory comparison scheme LABKAR for gasoline, diesel oil, LPG, lubricating oil and biodiesel samples have evolved to fulfill this need. In this paper, LABKAR is introduced; the results obtained from the program are analyzed and discussed. The kernel densities of the participants' results show that the use of robust mean as a consensus value is appropriate for fuel samples. Although the number of rounds is not enough to derive strict conclusions, it is seen that the performance of the scheme based on the standard deviations and coefficient of variations is improving in each round. It has been observed that the number of laboratories receiving "action" or "warning" is decreasing, which indicates that they are benefiting from the scheme.

    The Importance and Impact of Fossil and Renewable Energy Sources in Turkey on Business and the Economy

    Turkey is rapidly growing in terms of both its economy and its population. In parallel, its demand for energy is increasing fast. Energy is one of Turkey's most important development priorities. Today, Turkey's economy is mainly dependent on oil, natural gas, coal, and electricity. Turkey's energy production meets only a part of its total energy consumption and thereby is an energy-importing country. On the other hand, Turkey has a large potential for renewable energies. The most important renewable sources for Turkey's energy sector are wind, biomass, hydro, solar and geothermal. Renewable energy sources respond to the process of the trio of energy, economy, and environment because, as a local source it has many positive effects on employment and provides momentum to the economy of the country. Turkey would have to commit to the development and implementation of renewable energy technologies and energy conservation. The implementation of renewable energy technologies would reduce the current national and global environmental problems as well as national energy insecurity associated with the production and use of fossil energies. Thus, the aim of this article is to present the energy situation and potential of the renewable energy sources in Turkey as well as associate these factors with the economy and business priorities.
