Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 4Po and Ptd Approach To the Diffraction Problem by a Resistive Half-Plane(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2014) Basdemir, Husnu DenizDiffracted fields from a resistive half-plane were investigated by the method of physical optics (PO) and the physical theory of diffraction. The coefficient of the PO scattering integral was derived for the first time for the resistive half-plane. Uniform fringe field expressions were obtained in terms of the Fresnel functions. The resultant expressions of the fringe fields were plotted and analyzed numerically.Article Citation - WoS: 15Citation - Scopus: 16Scintillation Behaviour of Vortex Beams in Strong Turbulence Region(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2016) Eyyuboglu, H. T.We study the scintillation behaviour of vectorial vortex beams in strong turbulence region. For this purpose, a list of vortex source beams is prepared. Then their scintillation performances are analysed one by one using the random phase screen approach. The results indicate that there will always be scintillation reductions with increasing values of topological charge, although its effect will diminish as we go towards higher values of the topological charge. The increases in the other specific beam parameters seem to have opposite effect. For the vectorial Hermite Gaussian beam, the use of higher orders will also aid scintillation reductions. It is foreseen that the outcome of this study will be useful for long haul optical communication links.Article Citation - WoS: 49Citation - Scopus: 47Scintillation Index of Higher-Order Cos-Gaussian, Cosh-Gaussian and Annular Beams(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2008) Arpali, Serap Altay; Eyyuboglu, Halil T.; Baykal, YahyaIn this paper, via the generalized beam formulation, we evaluate the scintillation index for higher-order general beams propagating through the weak atmospheric turbulence. The investigated higher-order beam types are cos-Gaussian, cosh-Gaussian and annular beams. The scintillation indices of these beams are plotted with respect to propagation length, source size and order of the beam. According to our graphical outputs, higher-order beams have less on-axis scintillation index than zero-order beams at longer propagation distances. The on-axis scintillation exhibits a slight increase when the order of even-ordered beams is made higher. Moreover, our study on the source size variation shows that, for most of the source size range, cos-Gaussian beams have a lower scintillation index than the other beams.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 31Design of Microstrip Bandpass Filters Based on Stair-Step Patch Resonator(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2019) Mezaal, Yaqeen Sabah; Al-Zayed, Ayman S.In this research article, single pole bandpass filter using stair-step patch topology based on symmetrical and asymmetrical step impedance resonators has been designed for industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) band application. This filter has been modelled by Microwave Office simulator using RT/Duroid substrate constant of 10.8, the substrate thickness of 1.27 mm, loss tangent of 0.0023 and copper metallisation thickness of 0.035 mm. To enhance the stopband levels of filter response, two microstrip bandpass filters have been designed as two-pole configurations based on edge, and cross-coupled stair-step patch resonators using the same simulator tool and substrate specifications. The proposed filters have compact sizes of (0.311 x 0.233 for single pole filter, (0.578 x 0.24) for two-pole edge coupled filter and (0.566 x 0.234for two-pole cross-coupled filter designed at centre frequencies of 2.4, 2.46 and 2.41 GHz, respectively. These filters have interesting insertion loss and return loss magnitudes, narrow band frequency responses, second harmonic suppression and good stopband levels. Apart from ISM band applications, the proposed filters can be adopted in WLAN systems and Bluetooth applications for short-range devices. The experimental results for designed filters are of good consistency with the simulations.Article Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 4The Performance Bounds of an Optical Communication System Using Irradiance Profile Modulation(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2017) Eyyuboglu, Halil T.We assess the performance bounds of an optical communication system that uses irradiance profile modulation. This modulation is based on the four different orders of vortex beams. To this end, we find the turbulence induced average irradiance profiles of Gaussian, Bessel-Gaussian and modified Bessel-Gaussian vortex beams on the receiver plane. Each one is then cross correlated against the free space equivalents. Plotting the cross-correlation coefficients, it becomes possible to identify the borders of correct decision and error regions, thus, deduce the performance bounds of such a system. When measured in terms of structure constant, i.e. the turbulence strength and the propagation length being fixed to 3km, it is seen that the error region extends beyond the structure constant values of 10(-13) m(-2/3) and higher. There seem to be some variations with the beam type and the order of the vortex beam. The performance of Bessel-Gaussian vortex beam comes out to be slightly better than the rest.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 6Scattering of Waves by a Soft-Hard Half-Plane Between Isorefractive Medium(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2017) Umul, Yusuf ZiyaThe scattering of plane waves by a soft-hard half-plane residing between isorefractive medium is studied. The scattered geometrical optics fields are obtained by subtracting the initial geometrical optics fields from the total geometrical optics waves. The diffracted fields are determined by considering the structure of the scattered geometrical optics waves. The uniform expressions for the diffracted fields are derived. The behaviour of the total waves is investigated numerically.Article Citation - WoS: 22Citation - Scopus: 20Scintillation Index of Optical Spherical Wave Propagating Through Biological Tissue(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2017) Baykal, Yahya; Arpali, Caglar; Arpali, Serap AltayEffects of the tissue turbulence on the propagation of an optical spherical wave are analysed. For this purpose, scintillation index of an optical spherical wave which is propagating in a soft tissue is formulated and evaluated in weakly turbulent soft tissue. Scintillation index of the optical spherical wave is examined against the changes in the tissue parameters which are the tissue length between the optical spherical wave source and the detector, random variations in the refractive index of the tissue and the outer scale of the tissue turbulence. According to our graphical outputs, it is observed that increase in the random variations of the refractive index of the tissue results in an increase in the scintillation index at a certain realization of the turbulence spectrum. On the other hand, larger outer scales and longer tissue lengths yield larger scintillations. The variation of the scintillation index of the optical spherical wave versus the wavelength is also investigated. It is found that at small tissue lengths, wavelength has almost no effect on the scintillations; however, when the tissue length reaches a certain value, shorter wavelengths give rise to larger intensity fluctuations.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Scattering of Waves by a Planar Junction Between Resistive Half-Screen and Perfectly Electric Conducting Wedge(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2018) Umul, Yusuf ZiyaThe diffraction of plane waves by a planar junction between a resistive half-plane and perfectly conducting wedge is investigated. First of all, the relation between the scattered geometrical optics waves and diffracted fields by a wedge is outlined. Then the scattered GO fields of the planar junction are obtained by subtracting the initial fields from the total geometrical optics waves. The diffracted waves by the junction is derived with the aid of the scattered GO waves' structure. The behaviour of the fields is analysed numerically.Article Citation - WoS: 29Citation - Scopus: 35Ber Evaluations for Multimode Beams in Underwater Turbulence(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2016) Arpali, Serap Altay; Baykal, Yahya; Arpali, CaglarIn underwater optical communication links, bit error rate (BER) is an important performance criterion. For this purpose, the effects of oceanic turbulence on multimode laser beam incidences are studied and compared in terms of average BER (< BER >), which is related to the scintillation index. Based on the log-normal distribution, < BER > is analysed for underwater turbulence parameters, including the rate of dissipation of the mean squared temperature, the rate of dissipation of the turbulent kinetic energy, the parameter that determines the relative strength of temperature and salinity in driving index fluctuations, the Kolmogorov microscale length and other link parameters such as link length, wavelength and laser source size. It is shown that use of multimode improves the system performance of optical wireless communication systems operating in an underwater medium. For all the investigated multimode beams, decreasing link length, source size, the relative strength of temperature and salinity in driving the index fluctuations, the rate of dissipation of the mean squared temperature and Kolmogorov microscale length improve the < BER >. Moreover, lower < BER > values are obtained for the increasing wavelength of operation and the rate of dissipation of the turbulent kinetic energy in underwater turbulence.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Correction of Amplitude Distortions for Truncated Bessel Beam and Ser Estimation for 4ask(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2016) Eyyuboglu, Halil T.We apply amplitude corrections to a truncated Bessel beam that has propagated through turbulent atmosphere modelled by random phase screens. These corrections are realized via transmitting an unmodulated beam in parallel to the one carrying the 4 amplitude shift keying (ASK) modulated message signal. On the receiver side, the amplitude corrections are obtained by dividing the intensity of the unmodulated beam by its free space equivalence. The corrections are then used to restore the amplitude distortions of the beam carrying the 4ASK modulated message signal and in the determination of decision boundaries for the received 4ASK symbols. The success of the system is visually inspected by comparing the received intensity profiles before and after the application of corrections. Furthermore, simulation analysis of symbol error rate (SER) is made, where the proposed set-up is found to be quite insensitive to wavelength difference between the unmodulated and modulated beams. On the other hand, the difference in the structure constant values of these two beams seems to have profound effect on system performance.
