Methods: The cross-sectional online study was conducted with 752 volun-teer participants in Turkey. The participants were assessed with the nine-item Internet Gaming Disorder Scale - Short Form (IGDS9-SF) and the Motives for Online Gaming Questionnaire (MOGQ). Results: The age of participants who engage with loot boxes (n=171, 22.7%) was lower than the group who do not engage with loot boxes (n=581, 77.3%). Also, of the male using microtransaction, buying games, time spent on the gaming, gaming more than usual on weekends, being an e-sport gamer and/or following e-sport, having problems related with gaming, using MMORPGs, the severity of IGD symptoms, and all six types of motives for online gaming were higher in the group who engage with loot boxes. Age at first gaming did not differ between the groups. In the logistic regression model, loot box engagement was related to the severity of disordered gaming, using MMORPGs and severities of skill development and competition motives for online gaming. Conclusion: These findings suggest that those who engage with loot boxes may be using MMORPGs more with the motives of skill development and competition and they may have higher severity of IGD symptoms. Thus, this group of gamers who engage with loot boxes should be considered as a risk group and interventions should particularly include these individuals.Article Citation - WoS: 16Citation - Scopus: 16Measuring Dysfunctional Grief Due To a Covid-19 Loss: a Turkish Validation Study of the Pandemic Grief Scale(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Evren, Cuneyt; Evren, Bilge; Dalbudak, Ercan; Topcu, Merve; Kutlu, NilayThe global death toll to date of the COVID-19 pandemic has been enormous, and millions of people are grieving these losses. The aim of the current study is to validate a Turkish version of the Pandemic Grief Scale (PGS), which is a brief English-language mental health screener to identify probable cases of dysfunctional grief associated with a COVID-19 death. Participants were assessed using the PGS, Patient Health Questionnaire-4 (PHQ-4) and Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS). We surveyed 758 Turkish native speakers who participated online. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the factor structure of the PGS was satisfactory. The scale was internally consistent with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.77 and a composite reliability of 0.90. The PGS demonstrated construct validity with strong correlations with suicidal ideation and substance use coping. Positive correlations of the PGS with the PHQ-4 and the WSAS demonstrated adequate convergent validity. The PGS discriminates well between persons with and without dysfunctional grief using an optimized cut score of >= 3 (89% sensitivity and 72% specificity). The PGS also demonstrates incremental validity by explaining most of the variance (43%) in functional impairment due to a COVID-19 loss beyond measures of depression and generalized anxiety. Positive correlations of the CAS with the OCS and the Fear of COVID-19 Scale demonstrated adequate convergent validity. The aim of the second study is to validate the GDST psychometrically. Methods: In the first study participants were assessed with GDST. Sample comprised of 400 Turkish university students and video game players (54.0% male, mean age 24.30 years, SD=6.83) that was enrolled online. In the second study the sample (n=326; 60.1% male, mean age 23.54 years, SD=4.44) was similar with the first study. Participants were assessed with GDST, the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) and the Gambling Motives Questionnaire (GMQ). Results: In the first study, according to the exploratory factor analysis a single component accounted for 64.02% of total variance. The scale was internally consistent with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.93, thus considered as reliable. In the second study, confirmatory factor analysis showed that GDST's factor structure (i.e., the unidimensional structure) was satisfactory. Positive correlations between GDST and the number of self-reported gambling type, SOGS and GMQ scores demonstrated adequate convergent and criterion-related validity. Also the GDST had a Cronbach's alpha of 0.92 in this sample. Conclusion: These findings from Study 1 and Study 2 suggest that the Turkish GDST is a valid and reliable measure to assess the severity of GD related issues according to APA's framework among young adults and for the purposes of early detection of GD in clinical settings and research.Article The role of schemata in responsibility among people with traumatic event history(2018) Topcu, Merve; Köroğlu, Deniz; Gençöz, FarukSchemata can be thought of as an abstract cognitive plan that serves as a guide for solving problems and interpreting knowledge. Schemata rooted in the early childhood. Trauma can be defined as events which disrupt the daily routine, develop suddenly and unexpectedly, create horror, anxiety and panic, and disturb the process of making sense of the world. Trauma have an important role in development of early maladaptive schemata. However, after traumatic event exposure it is possible to show psychological improvement, which is entitled as posttraumatic growth. Positive correlation between posttraumatic growth and responsibility has been found in the literature. Responsibility defined as individual's fulfillment of antecedents and consequences of their emotions, cognitions, and behaviors. It was thought that understanding the responsibility could be essential on the way through posttraumatic growth. The role of early maladaptive schemata in responsibility among people with traumatic event history was examined. A cross-sectional paper-pencil format study conducted with 139 participants who reported at least one traumatic event exposure included in the analysis. Informed consent, socio-demographic form, the Positive and Negative Affect Scale, the Young Schema Questionnaire Short Form, the Social Desirability Inventory, and the Responsibility Scale were given to the participants. Correlational analysis shows that responsibility was negatively and significantly correlated with emotional deprivation, failure to achieve, pessimism, mistrust, emotional inhibition, dependence, abandonment, defectiveness, instability, whereas relationship between responsibility and punitiveness was positively and significantly correlated. 2-stepped hierarchical regression analysis run to examine the role of early maladaptive schemata in the prediction of responsibility. Social desirability and positive and negative affect for last six months were entered in the first step. Significantly correlated early maladaptive schemata dimensions with responsibility entered in the second step. Results demonstrated that only punitiveness schema significantly predicted responsibility when controlled for social desirability and positive and negative affect for last six months. Punitiveness accounted for the variance of responsibility with the proportion of 5%. That is, although several schemata are related to the responsibility, only participants who has punitiveness schema feels more responsibility. On the way through posttraumatic growth, having punitiveness schema may be an inhibitor factor. Further studies may consider examining posttraumatic growth as considering the responsibility and early maladaptive schemata.Article Citation - WoS: 25Citation - Scopus: 28The Impact of Depression, Anxiety, Neuroticism, and Severity of Internet Addiction Symptoms on the Relationship Between Probable Adhd and Severity of Insomnia Among Young Adults(Elsevier Ireland Ltd, 2019) Evren, Bilge; Evren, Cuneyt; Dalbudak, Ercan; Topcu, Merve; Kutlu, NilayThe aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of depression, anxiety, neuroticism, and severity of Internet addiction symptoms (IAS) on the relationship between probable attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and severity of insomnia among young adults. The study was conducted with online survey among 1010 volunteered university students in Ankara, people who are in the e-mail database of a company located in Istanbul that organizes e-sports tournaments and Turkish garners from gaming forums. Scale scores were higher among the group with high probability of insomnia (n = 200, 19.8%). Also risk of high probability of insomnia was 2.7 times higher among those with probable ADHD. In linear regression analysis, both inattentiveness and hyperactivity/impulsivity dimensions of ADHD were related with the severity of insomnia, together with severities of anxiety, depression, neuroticism and IAS. Similarly, presence of probable ADHD was related with the severity of insomnia in ANCOVA, together with severities of anxiety, depression, neuroticism and IAS. These findings suggest that the presence of probable ADHD and the severity of ADHD symptoms are related with the severity of insomnia, even after controlling the depression, anxiety, neuroticism and IAS, which are all related with the severity of insomnia, among young adults.
