Article A Housing Satisfaction Study in an Area of Urban Transformation: The Case of the Turk-Is Apartment Blocks(Yildiz Technical Univ, FAC Architecture, 2017) Kahraman, Zerrin Ezgi; Ozdemir, Suna SenemThis study investigated the housing satisfaction and the urban transformation expectations in the Turk-is Blocks, built by a labor cooperative in the Altinpark neighborhood of Altindag, Ankara. The area was declared risky in 2013. A survey and in-depth interviews were conducted to examine the satisfaction of residents with housing and their expectations of urban transformation. The results revealed that a large number of the respondents were satisfied with their houses and living environment. Satisfaction increased with duration of time living in the area and age. Over time, the homogenous and stable population in the area has reorganized their houses according to their needs and established a spatial, social, and emotional connection to their neighborhood. The strengths of the area include its neighborhood identity, close social relations, accessibility, and sufficiency of urban services and green areas. Areas of dissatisfaction included insufficient indoor installations, cultural/sports facilities, and security and parking lot problems. Most residents did not support urban transformation plans; however, those who do support the idea have high expectations of the process. With the condition of maintaining their current spatial rights, many perceived urban transformation as a solution to the problems of the area and indicated that their economic status has improved and that life has become more luxurious and comfortable.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Student Participation in Bologna Process: a Case Study From Turkey(Fac Teacher Education, 2014) Kahraman, Zerrin Ezgi; Kahraman, Z. Accordingly, in this study, we investigated the different dimensions of Syrian refugees' location choices at the urban/neighbourhood level. Specifically, we aimed to understand the dynamics behind the growing tendency among Syrian refugees in Turkey to settle in neighbourhoods that are close to inner-city industrial sites by conducting two case studies in the Onder neighbourhood of Ankara and the Yunusemre neighbourhood of Izmir in a comparative manner. From the twenty-three interviews conducted with Syrians, we uncovered the themes of LC and categorized them in accordance with the dimensions of LC addressed in the literature. We identified three main dimensions that affected Syrians' location choices at the neighbourhood level as: economic (the availability of job opportunities, public and commercial services, the affordability of accommodation), socio-cultural (the existence of co-ethnics, kinship/ethnic relations) and socio-spatial (proximity to the city centre, transportation, public and commercial services, workplaces). Here, we acknowledged the intertwined relation between these dimensions and refugee subjectivity in LC.Article Citation - WoS: 6Kentsel Dönüşümü Gündeme Gelen Bir Alan İçin Konut Memnuniyeti Araştırması: Türk-iş Blokları Örneği(2017) Özdemir, Suna Senem; Kahraman, Zerrin EzgiBu çalışmada bir işçi kooperatifi tarafından inşa edilmiş, Ankara Altındağ Belediyesi Altınpark Mahallesi sınırları içinde bulunan Türk-işBlokları’nda konut memnuniyeti ve kentsel dönüşüme ilişkin eğilim incelenmiştir. Article Citation - WoS: 1Quality of Life in Regeneration Areas: Empirical Findings From the Akpinar Neighbourhood, Ankara, Turkey(Kare Publ, 2017) Kahraman, Zerrin Ezgi; Orhan, EzgiThe article is a discussion of the concept of quality of life in a regeneration area based on the personal evaluation of residents. Developed by social scientists to evaluate people's well-being, satisfaction, and happiness, the concept of quality of life raises the issue of adapting the conditions of living spaces to meet people's needs, expectations, and demands. The aim of this study was to establish an integrated and comprehensive framework for evaluating the quality of life in a regeneration case in Turkey through empirical research conducted at the neighborhood level. Data were collected from 359 households in the regenerated neighborhood of Akpinar, in the city of Ankara, using a questionnaire to inquire about the quality of life. The methodological framework of the study included a theory-based choice of indicators identified in a comprehensive literature review, including economic, ecological, physical, and social aspects of an urban environment, and an analysis of the relationship of the indicators to quality of life. Despite the diverse literature on urban environmental quality, there is no uniform, generally accepted conceptual framework to measure quality of life. Therefore, in this research, a mix of qualitative and quantitative analysis was adopted to assess the quality of life of the residents with respect to their housing and urban environment. The findings suggested that modern quality of life requires understanding the social, political, spatial conditions, and needs of residents. Based on the findings of the study, policy recommendations were developed to enhance quality of life at the neighborhood level from a space-sensitive perspective.
