Abstract
The Covid-19 pandemic thoroughly tested all major and minor actors in the world as of March 2020. However, the post-Soviet entities suffered more due to underlying inadequacies and limited recognition. In such a framework, this chapter aims at exploring the background conditions in healthcare, geopolitics, and economy that exacerbated the difficulties during the pandemic, with a focus on Abkhazia, South Ossetia, and Karabakh. It holds that the background conditions exacerbated the plight of the entities throughout the contagion, the long-term effects of which are yet to be fully understood. In such a context, it first provides a relevant account of the three realms in the pre-1991 period, to be followed by one on the pandemic period in the entities. The final analysis affirms the need for future capacity development. © The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.
