Article Udolphonun Gizemleri: Onsekizinci Yüzyıl Kadını İçin Ann Radcliffe'in Önerdiği Uysal Gotik Kültür(2014) Koç, Ertuğrul; Güvenç, ÖzgeTarihsel, Marksist, ve feminist bakış açıları ile yorumladığımızda, Ann Radcliffein Udolphonun Gizemleri adlı romanında, tarihin feodal sistemden kapitalist düzene ilerleme sürecinde kadının durumunu ana tema yaparak, bu geçiş dönemini tasfir ettiği söylenebilir. Radcliffe eski sistemi Apollonian (yani akıl ve uyum) olarak kabul ederken, yeni düzeni de Dionysian (yani içgüdü ve karmaşa) ile bağdaştırmıştır. Yazarın yarattığı outopiada (olmayan yer) ana karakter Emily ve diğer iyi karakterler yerleşik feodalitenin doğrularını temsil ederken, Montoni ve arkadaşları ise onsekizinci yüzyılın gelişmekte olan kapitalizmini ve bu yapının yıkıcılığını anlatmaktadır. Romanın sonunda eski sistemin yeni düzene karşı kazandığı zaferin üzerinde önemle durulmasına rağmen, Radcliffein önerdiği çözüm tatmin edici değildir; çünkü ana kahraman Emily basmakalıp bir karakter olarak kalmış, aidiyet hissettiği erkek-egemen toplumda halen bir erkeğin korumasına muhtaç, savunmasız bir genç kız tiplemesinden öteye gidememiştir. Bu yüzden Radcliffe, kendine güveni yüksek, devrimci bir karakter yaratamamış ve dolayısıyla kadın kimliğini koruyup destekleyen daha gelişmiş bir kültürel yapıyı eserinde ortaya koyamamıştır.Article Katherine Mansfield'in "Bahçe Partisi" Adlı Öyküsünde Sınıf Ayrımı Ve Toplumsal Cinsiyet Rolleri Konusundaki İkili Karşıtlıkların Yıkılması(2016) Güvenç, ÖzgeKatherine Mansfield bir karakterin düşünce ve gözlemlerine odaklanan anlatı tarzıyla İngiliz edebiyatında kısa öykü türünün gelişimine önemli katkıda bulunmuştur. \"The Garden Party\" (Bahçe Partisi) adlı öyküsünde Mansfield, zengin sınıfından Sheridan ailesinin bahçe partisi hazırlıklarını öykünün baş karakteri Laura'nın gözünden anlatır. Hazırlıklar için gelen işçilerle karşılaştığı andan itibaren, Laura sınıf ve cinsiyet ayrımclığını sorgulamaya başlar. Komşuları olan alt sınıftan Mr. Scott'ın ölüm haberi ve Laura'nın cenaze evini ziyareti ile karakterin sınıf ayrımına dair sorgulamaları gittikçe artar. The places occupied by the old woman in this story such as the Council flats, the room in the slum and the ruined flat in a wealthy neighbourhood cannot be considered as proper homes where people have a sense of belonging; rather, they are just material places she tries to appropriate as shelters temporarily on the way without a feeling of warmth and attachment to them. Focusing on the woman and the cat's relationship with their surrounding provides a discussion on space and nomadism within the framework of Henri Lefebvre's spatial tripartite - the perceived, the conceived and the lived - which is related to Rosi Braidotti's theory on nomadism. It also reveals the social norms and values, which disregard an old woman and her cat's struggle for life in a metropolis. Therefore, this article aims to discuss not only the material qualities of transient places in London and their conceived perspective which segregates the poor and the homeless from the wealthy but also the old woman's configuration of alternative spaces for herself out of the ruins without a sense of home. © 2019 Cyprus International University. Since teaching and learning through online portals has been a new experience, this has prompted the academics in the English Language and Literature Department at Cankaya University to seek alternative and creative ideas to promote student productivity, participation and motivation. The aim of this case study is to discuss how the course materials, teaching methods and assessment have been redesigned to meet the needs of online education during the pandemic. With the examples from changes in the syllabi, student survey and sample student responses, this study also reveals how the academics in the department have had an opportunity to re-evaluate systems of teaching both on and offline and to refresh their role as instructors.Article Citation - Scopus: 1Rhythmanalysis in Doris Lessing's "storms": London From a Critical View of Everyday Life(Karadeniz Technical University, 2020) Güvenç, Ö.Ü.; Güvenç, Ö.Ü.The interaction between humans and space has recently been one of the dominant issues in the works of the contemporary century to explain how thinking about space as a fixed and limiting framework has evolved to an alternative multidimensional understanding of it where human interventions create alternative space. This study aims not only to move beyond the setting descriptions in a literary text but also to open up Henri Lefebvre's theory of space, particularly his notion of rhythmanalysis, that have been utilized in the fields of architecture, sociology, geography, urban and regional planning to include literature as well. To this end, Doris Lessing's sketch, "Storms" from the collection London Observed: Stories and Sketches, will be analysed since it displays various life trajectories in London and provides a critical view of the city from two different perspectives - that of the taxi driver and of the narrator - which contradict each other. Focusing on their interpretations of London and to what extent they are able to sense and make meaning of rhythms, thus, offers a new mode of observing the movement and continuity of life in the city, which also displays the relationship between humans and the spaces they occupy, and what feelings they attribute to. © 2020 Karadeniz Technical University. All rights reserved.Master Thesis Terry Pratchett'in Going Postal Romanının Mekansal Okuması: Ankh-morpork Şehrindeki Güç Dinamikleri, Sosyal İlişkiler ve Fantezi(2024) Alagöz, Baran Eren; Güvenç, Özge ÜstündağÇağdaş dünyanın önde gelen fantastik kurgu yazarlarından Terry Pratchett'ın eserleri, yalnızca metinlerarası olma niteliğiyle değil, aynı zamanda gerçek ve gerçek dışı olanı alternatif sosyo-mekânsal bir boyutta deneyimleme olanağı sunan, eşi benzeri olmayan hayali dünyası, Diskdünya aracılığıyla modern fantastik edebiyatı zenginleştirmektedir. Bu çalışma, Pratchett'in Diskdünya serisindeki, yaygın olarak Moist von Lipwig serisi olarak bilinen üçlemenin ilki olan ve kahramanın Diskdünya'daki deneyimlerini merkeze alan Going Postal'a (2004) mekânsal bir bakış açısıyla yaklaşır. Michel Foucault, Henri Lefebvre ve Edward W. Soja'nın güncel mekân teorileri çerçevesinde bu çalışma, karakterler ve çevreleri arasındaki ilişkiyi inceleyerek güç dinamiklerinin, sosyal etkileşimlerin ve fantastik deneyimlerin mekânda nasıl ortaya çıktığını tartışır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, ilk bölümde Lord Havelock Vetinari ve Reacher Gilt'in şehir üzerinde hak iddia ederek iktidar sahibi olmak için Postane ve telgraf sistemi gibi kamusal alanları nasıl kullandıkları irdelenir. Bununla beraber, bu tez Moist von Lipwig'in Postaneyi aktif bir kamu hizmeti olarak yeniden yapılandırmak amacıyla mekânla kurduğu ilişkisel etkileşimi ve vatandaşların Postanede mektup yazmalarını inceleyerek, Postanenin fiziksel niteliklerinin ötesine geçen dinamik bir mekân olduğunu göstermekle kalmaz, aynı zamanda bu mekânın Moist'in sosyal ilişkilerini nasıl şekillendirdiğini de sergiler. All rights reserved.Article From Socially Constructed Subjectivity To Matrixial Subjectivity in Doris Lessing's “debbie and Julie”(Hyperion University, 2023) Güvenç, Ö.Ü.The formation of subjectivity based on the woman-body and man-mind association has resulted in female inferiority and male dominance. As Kate Cregan states “… the body has been categorized as emotional and feminized in opposition to the masculinized rational mind,” (82) and therefore, regarded as unruly. Moreover, the female body, particularly during pregnancy and childbirth, has been an arena of power dynamics as it is characterized by instability and indeterminacy. This essentialist approach reveals how the biological determinism of the female body is socially constructed, relegated to a subordinate presence and naturalized in a male-dominated society. Doris Lessing's short story “Debbie and Julie” from her London Observed: Stories and Sketches (1993) undermines such fallacious views concerning the female body by foregrounding a young pregnant girl's exploration of her subjectivity from the prenatal to postnatal period through her relational interaction with docile and marginal bodies as well as the baby both inside and outside her body. Hence, this article displays how female bond, pregnancy and childbirth generate alternative views for a pregnant teenager in attaining her subjectivity within the framework of Bracha L. Ettinger's “Matrixial Theory.” © 2024 by the author.Article Doris Lessing'in "The De Wets Come to Kloof Grange" Adlı Öyküsünde Alternatif Mekanların Yapılandırılması(2017) Güvenç, ÖzgeDoris Lessing'in This Was the Old Chief's Country başlıklı kısa öykü kitabından alınan \"The De Wets Come to Kloof Grange\" adlı öykü, binbaşı Gale ve eşinin Rodezya'daki tek düze çiftlik hayatlarının beyaz Afrikalı yeni yardımcıları De Wet'lerin gelmesiyle nasıl değiştiğini anlatmaktadır. Bu çalışma iki kültür arasındaki hibritleşmenin yalnızca fiziksel mekan boyutunda gerçekleşebildiğini ve kadın karakterlerin ev, bahçe ve doğal çevre gibi alanları nasıl sınırları olan kısıtlayıcı mekan anlayışından alternatif mekanlara dönüştürdüklerini, Edward Soja ve Homi Bhabha'nın Thirdspace / Third Space ve Rosi Braidotti'nin gezgin kuramları kapsamında incelemeyi amaçlamaktadır.
