Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Insights Into Acoustics Courses in Interior Architecture Education(Society of Acoustics, 2024) Yorukoglu, P.N.D.The multi-disciplinary nature of interior architecture education includes varying topics on design, construction, building physics, history, arts, and so on. Acoustics is an important building physics topic that takes part in the most updated interior architecture curriculum, with an increased number of theoretical courses. Yet, it might be inadequate to load theoretical knowledge without hands-on training in fields that are more practice-oriented such as interior architecture, which takes its roots from design and architecture education. Topic-specific awareness and the ability to integrate theoretical knowledge into architectural design should be gained during the early years of interior architecture undergraduate education. Within the framework of this study, insights into mandatory and elective courses on sound and acoustics in the Department of Interior Architecture at Çankaya University, Ankara, Turkiye are presented. In addition to detailed evaluations of interior architecture curriculum and acoustics course design, student feedback and outputs that have been reported previously in the literature are discussed to give a broader understanding of awareness and education in the field of acoustics. © 2024 Proceedings of the International Congress on Sound and Vibration. Different aspects of sounds’ interaction with humans and places have provided that value of soundscape has become significant in heritage sites. The semantic values hidden in the intricate content of soundscapes within an urban context and their cultural values are in the scope of this study. In this sense, a methodological framework is introduced that is merged from the studies on cultural soundscape that are present in the literature. Accordingly, a pilot study was conducted as a case study based on the presented framework. The old city centre of Ankara, where new functions have been assigned with restoration projects in an adaptive reuse approach, and its heritage value from the perspective of its lost and changed soundscape, especially during and after the restoration were considered. Soundwalks and listening points on the pre-identified routes and semantic sound analysis were conducted as a pilot study in order to evaluate the restoration process during construction and after construction period of the sound environment at Ankara Citadel region. The importance of observing, surveying, managing, and preserving the historic sound environment of such historic heritage sites and its importance for the urban habitual life and society are discussed.Conference Object Spatial Design Outcomes of Indoor Soundscaping Course as Part of Interior Architecture Education(The Institute of Noise Control Engineering of the USA, Inc., 2022) Yörükoğlu, Papatya Nur; Yörükoğlu, P.N.D.; İç MimarlıkIndoor soundscaping is a multi-disciplinary field that integrates, sound, user experience, and architecture. At its core, it has the potential to redefine any enclosed acoustic environment. Listening to spaces should be an active act of an interior architect; an awareness that should be gained during the early years of interior architecture undergraduate education. The elective course with the same name, 'Listening to Spaces' has been offered to interior architecture students since 2015 at Çankaya University, Ankara, Turkey under the Department of Interior Architecture, with the aim of implementing an important additional topic specific course to the present education curriculum of the Department as the course combines architectural, spatial and functional analysis methods from an acoustical perspective, in order to raise awareness on conscious listening of spaces with different functions. The course is conducted through interactive learning bases and the orientation is more research-based than teaching-based, although basic acoustical and soundscape theoretical knowledge is given. Students are expected to accomplish 6 tasks progressively following the cognitive process dimensions parallel to Bloom's taxonomy. The outcomes of the tasks and the final spatial design proposals has been evaluated and discussed as part of this study to highlight the importance of topic specific course integration to architectural design education. © 2022 Internoise 2022 - 51st International Congress and Exposition on Noise Control Engineering. Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 21Indoor Soundscape Perception in Residential Spaces: a Cross-Cultural Analysis in Ankara, Turkey(Sage Publications Ltd, 2020) Mohamed, Mohamed Ali Elghadaffi; Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur Dokmeci; Dokmeci Yorukoglu, Papatya NurStudies in the literature suggest that factors influencing soundscape perception are based heavily on sound environments and auditory perception. Nevertheless, in studying the soundscape perception of people living in certain acoustic environments, cultural, social and habitual criteria should be taken into consideration. Residential environments are where people spend most of their time. Therefore, understanding the soundscape perception in the residential context is significant for indoor soundscape studies. This research investigates the residential soundscape perception differences of two different culture groups living in Ankara, Turkey. A total of 405 Arab and Turkish residents are included in the study. The questionnaire findings are statistically analysed using one-way analysis of variance and t-test. The results suggest that the sound environment in a house setting is equally important for both culture groups, while the Arab residents showed a higher satisfaction level from their present sound environment in their residences. Furthermore, statistically significant differences have been found based on cultural variances of the two groups regarding the overall soundscape perception, sound source loudness, frequency of occurrence, and sound favourability evaluations.Conference Object Where Does Indoor Soundscaping Stand in Architectural Practice? Opinions of the Built Environment Experts(European Acoustics Association, EAA, 2023) Osma, U.B.E.; Yörükoğlu, P.N.D.Noise regulations and acoustics standards have been increasingly in operation to manage noise exposures in built environment fields. On the other hand, with its positive attitude towards sounds and addressing sounds as a resource, the rather recent field of soundscaping has not been much considered by experts in the built environment. Accordingly, this study aims to address this gap and collect opinions and feedback from built environment experts on the role of indoor soundscaping during architectural practice. Interviews with field experts such as architects and interior architects are carried out through semi-structured questionnaires to gather data on; (1) noise, acoustics, and soundscape-related considerations and applications, (2) awareness of noise, acoustics, and indoor soundscape terminology, (3) integration of indoor soundscaping principles in architectural design and application. Within the scope of this study, the data gathered from the field experts are used to drive evaluations on awareness, expectation, and importance regarding the role of indoor soundscaping during architectural practice and more specifically, sound in spatial design. As a result, this study is expected to be an initial step to increase awareness regarding the importance of including indoor soundscaping during architectural design and application by revealing the overlooked points obtained from field experts. © 2023 First author et al. Many professionals and students focus primarily on visual, technical, and structural elements, missing the impact that sound has on well-being, spatial quality, and experience. This study reviews existing research on the importance of acoustics and soundscaping in interior architecture education and practice, highlighting gaps in awareness and common practice. Based on these insights, a practical roadmap is proposed to better integrate acoustics into education and professional practice. By incorporating sound-conscious design projects in studio environments during undergraduate education and supporting interdisciplinary collaboration with adapting new technologies, this study aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice. Raising awareness at both the academic and professional levels will help create more acoustically comfortable and enhanced environments that would support user satisfaction and well-being.Conference Object İşitsel peyzaj yaklaşımının mimari süreç ile ilişkilendirilmesi üzerine bir ön model çalışması(2021) Erçakmak Osma, U. Mohamed; Yorukoglu, Papatya Nur Dokmeci; Dokmeci Yorukoglu, Papatya NurThe effecting factors of soundscape perception and space experience have a very close relationship. This study aims to synthesize the diversity of soundscape classifications and schemes and unify such factorial variations in order to develop an integrated framework for soundscape perception and spatial experience within a systematic review of recent progress and by adapting post-occupancy evaluation methodology. First, factors under soundscape perception and space experience are reviewed in detail and merged to form conceptual classification models. Six soundscape perception factors are formed as (1) sonic, (2) spatial, (3) temporal, (4) psychological, (5) behavioural and (6) personal. Similarly, five space experience factors are formed as (1) user, (2) usage, (3) architectural design, (4) social context and (5) physical environment. All related items in the literature are presented and the sub-items under each factor are exemplified. Second, factors under the merged conceptual models are integrated by considering occupants' experience of space regarding their variance in perception of soundscapes through acoustical post-occupancy evaluation. An adapted study design is proposed under indicative, investigative and diagnostic stages of the post-occupancy evaluation by presenting the methods, data types and factorial correlations for each stage.Conference Object Occupant experience of soundscapes in university office spaces(2018) Aburawis, Ayad; Dökmeci Yörükoğlu, Papatya NurFor indoor soundscaping, identifying the relationship between soundscape perception and spatial experience and contributing factors is crucial. This study focuses on working environments and user interactions with the related soundscape variables, in university office spaces. Initially, a conceptual framework is established in order to evaluate the occupant’s spatial experience and soundscape perception. Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) methodology is adapted for data collection and analysis. A systematical procedure of POE has been conducted to collect the data in three levels; (1) indication, (2) investigation, and (3) diagnosis. The first POE stage on indication is carried out by observations on space characteristics and measurements of the physical environment. The structure of the case study design and POE methodology is explained and the initial findings are presented as part of this ongoing study
